THE AUTISTIC ARTIST
Short Documentary
The Autistic Artist is a short portrait documentary following abstract colour painter Charlotte Crawford and the relationship between her art, identity and experience of the world as someone with Autism.
What interested me most about Charlotte’s story was that her diagnosis became the beginning of understanding herself properly for the first time. The film gradually became less about Autism itself and more about identity, self-acceptance and the relief that can come from finally having language for the way you experience the world.
I wanted the film to feel like an extension of Charlotte herself. Vibrant, textural and emotionally led. We shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio inspired by the proportions of her canvases, creating a more intimate portrait of her and the spaces she occupied.
Directed by Charles Logan Clare.
